The Imo State Government has announced its commitment to implementing the recommendations of the National Judicial Council (NJC) regarding the appointment of an acting chief judge for the state.
This decision follows a review of the outcomes of the NJC’s 108th meeting.
In a press statement released on Friday, May 2, 2025, and signed by the Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation, and Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba, the government stated that the initial appointment of Hon. Justice Theophilus Nzeukwu as Acting Chief Judge by His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma, was based on credible information available at the time.
This information, according to the statement, indicated that Justice Nzeukwu was the most senior judicial officer without any outstanding unresolved issues.
The government further clarified that these details and the context surrounding the appointment were duly communicated to the NJC.
The state government emphasised its respect for the NJC’s statutory duties and acknowledged the Council’s advisory constitutional role in judicial appointments.
Consequently, the government stated that it recognises and accepts the NJC’s latest position on the matter.
While maintaining that the appointment of Justice Nzeukwu was made in good faith and within legal parameters, the Imo State Government affirmed its long-standing respect for due process and the judiciary.
In line with this commitment, the government will comply with the NJC’s recommendation.
The statement concluded by assuring the public that steps are currently underway to implement the decision of the National Judicial Council. This indicates that the state government is prepared to take the necessary actions to align with the NJC’s directive regarding the appointment of the acting chief judge.
