Marseille regained second place in Ligue 1 on Sunday, despite being held to a 1-1 draw by fellow Champions League contenders Lille.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side moved one point ahead of third-place Monaco, with Lille, Nice, and Strasbourg all trailing by a point, leaving two matches to determine the final Champions League spots. Paris Saint-Germain, the dominant league leaders, are already 19 points clear and have secured the title.
The top three teams will directly qualify for next season’s Champions League group stage, with the fourth-place team entering the qualifying rounds.
Marseille were the more dominant side in a lacklustre first half, coming close to scoring when Lucas Chevalier made a crucial save to deny Michael Murillo. The Lille goalkeeper also kept out a one-on-one attempt from Adrien Rabiot early in the second half.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. Rabiot played a perfectly timed pass behind the Lille defence, and Amine Gouiri slotted in his eighth Ligue 1 goal of the season, following his January move from Rennes.
However, Lille responded 15 minutes later after a blunder by Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli. Rulli miskicked a pass to Jonathan David, who squared the ball for Matias Fernandez-Pardo to tap in the equaliser.
Lille nearly took the lead minutes later when David’s long-range shot sailed narrowly over the bar, as Marseille’s defence began to falter.
Marseille pushed for a late winner, but Lille held firm to earn a potentially crucial point as the race for the Champions League spots continues.
