OpenAI revealed a new initiative on Wednesday, aimed at assisting nations in developing their artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructures, with the US government collaborating on the project.
The move from the tech company based in San Francisco places its technology at the global core of national AI platforms, mainly as it competes with the Chinese firm DeepSeek.
Deepseek’s ability to deliver highly effective AI models at reduced prices has unsettled Silicon Valley and intensified demands for major US tech companies to safeguard their lead in this burgeoning field.
“It’s clear to everyone now that this kind of infrastructure is going to be the backbone of future economic growth and national development,” OpenAI said in a blog post.
The OpenAI for Countries initiative was launched as part of a Stargate initiative introduced by US President Donald Trump, which aims to allocate up to $500 billion for AI infrastructure in the United States.
As stated by the tech company, in partnership with the US government, Openai will assist nations in establishing data centres and offer customised versions of its Chatgpt AI designed for local languages and cultures to enhance healthcare, education, and public services. The projects will include investments from both local sources and OpenAI itself.
According to OpenAI, participating countries would contribute to the wider Stargate Project, which aims to foster “US-led AI leadership. “
