Solar Energy Powers 24 Federal Tertiary Institutions—Alausa

Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced that 24 federal tertiary institutions have been equipped with solar energy through the “Energising Education Project” initiated by President Bola Tinubu’s Administration.

On Wednesday in Abuja, during the Collaboration Agreement Signing Ceremony with Vice Chancellors from the beneficiary institutions, Alausa revealed this information and noted that eight additional universities have entered into collaboration agreements to participate in the project’s fourth phase.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the minister inspected the solar-powered facilities at the University of Abuja before the signing ceremony, now called Yakubu Gowon University.

Alausa referred to the initiative as a “new day for Nigeria” and praised Tinubu’s transformative effort to ensure an uninterrupted power supply to the country’s federal tertiary institutions. He remarked that the initiative offers significant advantages for education and the economy.

“It allows for increased academic activity, powers laboratories and libraries throughout the day and night, and improves living and learning conditions for both students and faculty.” he said.

He said that the University of Abuja, which now features a solar farm with 6,000 photovoltaic panels, produces about 3.3 megawatts of electricity daily—sufficient to keep the campus continuously powered.

The minister clarified that this project is supported by the Renewable Infrastructure Fund, which President Tinubu established to aid infrastructure advancement across various sectors.

He urged university vice chancellors to develop innovative and creative strategies for sustaining the project, emphasising that by 2027, all tertiary institutions would have their renewable energy sources.
