Paris Saint-Germain secured a spot in the Champions League final with a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the second leg of their semifinal matchup on Wednesday, resulting in a 3-1 aggregate win.
Fabian Ruiz fired a shot from the edge of the box in the 27th minute at the Parc des Princes, putting PSG in a strong position after withstanding an early onslaught from the visitors.
Already ahead in the tie following Ousmane Dembele’s goal in the first leg last week, PSG witnessed Vitinha’s penalty saved in the second half. However, Hakimi sealed Arsenal’s fate by scoring in the 72nd minute, even though Bukayo Saka managed to net one back for the visitors shortly after.
PSG will face Inter Milan in a final showdown in Munich on May 31. This will be their second Champions League final appearance, five years after they lost to Bayern Munich in Lisbon.
On the other hand, Arsenal’s hopes for European glory ended as they failed to reach what would have been their second final, 19 years after their defeat to Barcelona in Paris.
Still awaiting a trophy since the 2020 FA Cup, Mikel Arteta’s squad now has only a third consecutive second-place finish in the Premier League to pursue.
The atmosphere in Paris was electric throughout the evening, and PSG relished the chance to celebrate reaching a final in front of their supporters for the first time, following their 2020 semifinal win against RB Leipzig, which was held without fans due to the pandemic.
