Sudan Army has announced a transition council after state television had said early Thursday that the armed forces would make an “important announcement soon”, amid speculation that a coup attempt was underway against President Omar al-Bashir following months of protests against his 30-year rule. But Bashir was later reported to have resigned.

Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir attends a meeting with his new 20-member cabinet as they take oath at the presidential palace in the capital on March 14, 2019. President Bashir swore in a new cabinet on March 14 to tackle the country’s economic crisis that has triggered demonstrations against his rule since December. The new cabinet led by Prime Minister Mohamed Tahir Eila is the third such government formed in less than two years, with the previous two sacked by Bashir for failing to revive the dilapidated economy.
