Police clashed with demonstrators in Nairobi on Monday during protests against ongoing abductions and enforced disappearances across the country.
Authorities fired numerous tear gas canisters at the protesters, who refused to leave the area. Several journalists also found themselves caught in the chaos that persisted for several hours.
Before the unsuccessful efforts to disperse them, hundreds of demonstrators flooded the streets of Nairobi to express their opposition to the abductions and enforced disappearances occurring in the country, which are attributed to state agencies.
Despite a strong police presence, the protesters shouted slogans demanding the prompt release of abducted youths.
Activist Odhiambo Ojiro, who led the crowd in songs denouncing President William Ruto’s government, stated that they were protesting against a regime characterised by impunity.
Businesses in Nairobi’s central business district closed down due to the confrontations between police and protesters, which extended to Tom Mboya Street and Moi Avenue.
