Inter Edge Past Monza to Tighten Grip on Serie A Lead

Inter Milan survived a major scare against bottom-placed Monza to claim a hard-fought 3-2 victory on Saturday, extending their lead at the top of Serie A.

The defending champions now sit four points clear of second-placed Napoli, who face Fiorentina on Sunday.

Despite being overwhelming favourites against a struggling Monza side with just 14 points this season, Inter found themselves trailing by two goals in the first half.

Marko Arnautović pulled one back just before the break, giving Inter momentum as they dominated possession in the second half. Hakan Çalhanoğlu equalised in the 64th minute before Lautaro Martínez secured the win in the 77th minute with a header that deflected off Monza defender Giorgos Kyriakopoulos.

Though Inter endured a nervy evening, the victory piles pressure on Napoli, who are winless in their last five matches.

Elsewhere, AC Milan endured a similarly dramatic evening, battling back from two goals down to defeat Lecce 3-2 and avoid a fourth consecutive Serie A loss.

Lecce’s Montenegrin striker Nikola Krstović struck twice in the seventh and 59th minutes, leaving Milan staring at another defeat. However, an own goal from Antonino Gallo in the 68th minute gave them hope.

Christian Pulisic then equalised from the penalty spot five minutes later before completing the comeback with a winning strike nine minutes from time.

Despite the win, Milan remain eighth in the table, now 17 points adrift of league leaders Inter.

The result does little to ease pressure on manager Sergio Conceição, who replaced Paulo Fonseca in December. Reports suggest Milan’s hierarchy is already in advanced talks with former Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri.
