Goodison Park will serve as the home for Everton’s women’s team when the Premier League club opens their new venue at Bramley-Moore Dock next season, the English club announced on Tuesday.

David Moyes’ team is preparing to say an emotional goodbye to Goodison Park during the final men’s match at the 132-year-old stadium in Liverpool against Southampton on Sunday.

Rather than demolishing the iconic venue, the Toffees have kept Goodison the home ground for their Women’s Super League team.

Everton’s women currently compete at the nearby Walton Hall Park.

With a capacity of 39,572, Goodison will become the largest stadium in England specifically for women’s football. This season, Everton’s women drew an average attendance of 2,062 at their league matches, just under Walton Hall Park’s full capacity.

While constructing Everton’s new stadium with a 53,000-capacity on the dockside, the club’s former owners proposed a redevelopment plan for Goodison that included housing, a care home, retail spaces, and a public park.

However, after being acquired by The Friedkin Group in December, Everton changed their plans to maintain the stadium.

“We know how treasured Goodison is, not only to every Evertonian but to the game itself, and being able to keep such an iconic stadium at the heart of the legacy project is something that has been incredibly important to us,” Everton Chief Executive Angus Kinnear said.

Goodison will also stage some of the club’s youth academy matches.
