The Nigerian Army has issued an official response to an investigative report aired by News Central TV, which featured retired Major Lawal Ibrahim’s allegations of misconduct and criminal collusion by military personnel in Dandume, Katsina State.

In a press release dated May 28, 2025, with reference HQ DAPR/G9/220/11, the Directorate of Army Public Relations addressed the claims made against troops operating in the region.

“In response to the recent claim alleging complicity of Nigerian Army personnel in banditry activities within Dandume Community, Katsina State, the Nigerian Army deems it necessary to provide a factual and transparent account,” the statement began.

The Army reaffirmed its institutional standards, stating:
“As an institution rooted in professionalism, discipline and constitutional responsibility, the Nigerian Army maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of misconduct. Upon receipt of the complaint, an internal investigation was promptly initiated to ascertain the veracity of the claims, which included accusations of extortion, collaboration with bandits, the release of a known informant allegedly caught with live ammunition and general complacency by troops under the command of one Captain Rabiu.”

Following the investigation, the Army clarified that while some wrongdoing was discovered, the overall claims were exaggerated:
“Following a comprehensive investigation into the allegations, findings revealed that the claims were half-truth and misrepresentation of facts. Own investigation further revealed that a personnel serving under the aforementioned officer was found culpable and duly indicted for the illegal sales of ammunition to a civilian identified as Mr Saminu Mohammed.”

The indicted soldier is currently facing a court martial.
“Consequently, the soldier is being tried by a court martial in accordance with the provisions of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and other extant military laws and procedures. Upon conclusion of the court martial, the outcome will be made public in the interest of transparency and accountability. Meanwhile, the civilian accomplice has been handed over to the Department of State Services for further investigation and possible prosecution.”

Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, addressed the public perception surrounding the incident, saying:
“This is contrary to the insinuation that the suspect was released after the payment of One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00). The investigation therefore found that all other allegations against the Nigerian Army are false.”

Lt. Col. Anele thanked the public and media for their patience, reaffirming the Army’s stance on discipline and accountability:
“The NA commends the public and the media for their patience as the investigative process was meticulously pursued. As a reputable institution, we remain unwavering in our resolve to uphold the highest standards of conduct among our personnel. Members of the public are encouraged to report any act of unprofessionalism or misconduct through established and legitimate channels.”

She added that the actions of a few should not be allowed to overshadow the sacrifices of the larger force:
“As the people’s Army, we shall not allow the reprehensible actions of a few to undermine the selfless sacrifices and gallant efforts of the majority who risk their lives daily to safeguard the nation. The Nigerian Army remains committed, resolute and proactive in eradicating banditry, insurgency and all forms of criminal collaboration.”

The Nigerian Army emphasised that it remains committed to transparency, professionalism, and the relentless pursuit of national security objectives.
