Greece’s third-largest city, Patras, is in danger of a massive wildfire that Greek firefighters are attempting to contain as heat waves and high winds feed fires throughout the country.
With over 20 fires burning, Greece has asked for assistance from the European Union.
The situation is particularly difficult in the western Achaia region, where multiple villages have been evacuated and a new fire is threatening a historic archaeological site.
On Tuesday, a health centre was evacuated, and several homes were damaged.
Fire service officials called Wednesday “a very difficult day,” noting that 15 firefighters were hospitalised and a large number of fires had broken out, exacerbated by winds up to 88 kilometres per hour.
Since the beginning of the firefighting season, over 22,000 hectares have burned in Greece.
Similar blazes are also being fought in Spain, Portugal, Montenegro, and Albania.
