The Trump administration has ordered a comprehensive review of several Smithsonian museums to ensure their exhibits celebrate “American exceptionalism” and eliminate “divisive or partisan narratives.”
A letter from the White House to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch detailed that the review will focus on eight major museums, including the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
The initiative aims to assess the tone and historical framing of exhibitions and educational materials ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary next year.
This follows President Donald Trump’s efforts to exert more control over cultural institutions and cut arts funding during his second term.
The Smithsonian, in a statement to The New York Times, affirmed its commitment to “rigorous research and the accurate, factual presentation of history” and said it would “collaborate constructively with the White House.”
