Exxon Mobil has signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Gabon to explore for oil and gas off the country’s coast, the U.S. energy giant announced on Wednesday.
According to Reuters, the non-binding agreement marks an expansion of Exxon’s footprint in Africa, where it already operates in Nigeria, Angola, and Mozambique. The company had previously exited Equatorial Guinea in 2022.
An Exxon spokesperson said the firm will collaborate with Gabonese authorities to explore deepwater and ultra-deepwater offshore areas for potential hydrocarbon resources.
The deal follows Exxon’s August 2025 agreement with Trinidad and Tobago to explore deepwater zones, signalling the company’s renewed interest in offshore ventures after more than two decades away from the Caribbean nation.
