Iran has vehemently dismissed claims made by the United States alleging that Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ elite Quds Force attempted to assassinate the Israeli ambassador in Mexico.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei strongly refuted the accusation, calling it both “ridiculous and absurd.”

Baqaei asserted that the entire matter was “fabricated” and suggested it was merely an attempt to damage Iran’s friendly diplomatic relations with other nations.

The US had alleged that Iran initiated the assassination plot in late 2024, claiming it was successfully disrupted earlier this year.

According to American intelligence, the plot involved recruiting operatives through the Iranian embassy in Venezuela, a country whose leftist president, Nicolas Maduro, maintains a tactical alliance with Tehran.

The international reaction to the US accusation has been mixed.

Israel’s foreign ministry publicly thanked Mexican authorities for thwarting what it described as a “terrorist network directed by Iran.”

However, Mexico’s foreign ministry later countered the claims, stating that it had “received no information” regarding the supposed plot.

This controversy surfaced shortly after a recent 12-day war between Israel and Iran, which was marked by unprecedented bombing campaigns and briefly included US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites before a ceasefire took effect on June 24.
