The US House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to approve the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which compels the government to release unclassified documents related to the investigation and death of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The vote was a major turning point after President Donald Trump dropped his long-standing opposition to the bill over the weekend.
Trump had previously pressured congressional allies to block the material’s release, but he relented as it became clear that many Republicans were prepared to defy him, even forcing the bill to the floor via a rare “discharge petition.”
Trump has since stated he has “nothing to do with Jeffrey Epstein” and pledged not to veto the legislation.
The bill now moves to the Senate.
Lawmakers argue the public deserves answers in a case involving over 1,000 alleged victims and connections to the country’s elite.
However, the immediate “damning new revelations” may be premature, as the Justice Department retains the authority to withhold any information that could jeopardise an active federal investigation.
