US officials expressed optimism on Tuesday regarding high-level, closed-door negotiations between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia taking place in Abu Dhabi aimed at ending the war.
White House officials cited “tremendous progress” on the proposed peace plan, while noting that “delicate but not insurmountable details” remain to be finalised through further talks.
However, the ongoing intensity of the conflict was underlined by a massive Russian bombardment of Kyiv overnight, which resulted in civilian casualties and was described by Ukraine’s foreign minister as a “terrorist response” to the negotiations.

The talks are attempting to flesh out an updated version of a controversial 28-point plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, which initially favoured Russian demands like prohibiting Ukraine from joining NATO and ceding territory.
Ukrainian negotiators stated there is a “common understanding on the core terms.” Still, final details need to be settled in direct talks between President Zelenskyy and President Trump, with a visit to the US being sought soon.
