British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from the hospital following a road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday.

The accident, which occurred on December 29, 2025, claimed the lives of Joshua’s close friend, Lateef Ayodele, and another individual, Cina Gami.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and co-signed by the Lagos and Ogun state governments, officials said Joshua was discharged late in the afternoon after doctors confirmed he was clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.

“We pray the Almighty grant the repose of their souls whilst granting their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear this very sad and painful loss,” the statement read.

It added that Joshua was “heavy-hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends” but was deemed clinically fit to recuperate at home.

Following his discharge, Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home to pay their respects as the bodies of the two victims were being prepared for repatriation later in the day.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed condolences to the families of the victims and thanked the public for its support following the incident.

“We also want to appreciate the team of Doctors and medical personnel tag the Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi that attended to Anthony and those that sustained injuries . The quality of care and professionalism is truly commendable.”
