The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned the driver of a Lexus SUV involved in the road crash that claimed the lives of two people while carrying heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua.
Police brought the suspect, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, before a Sagamu Magistrate Court in Sagamu Local Government Area on Friday, January 2, 2026. The command confirmed that the 46-year-old driver faced formal charges in connection with the accident.
In a statement, the Police said Kayode was charged on four counts. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the charges include dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
Other counts cover reckless and negligent driving under Section 6(1); driving without due care and attention causing bodily harm and damage to property under Section 7(1); and driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Act.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties but remanded him in custody pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
The crash occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway while the driver transported Joshua and two of his friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. The Lexus SUV reportedly rammed into a stationary truck, killing Ayodele and Ghami at the scene, while Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.
