The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has re-arrested an 80-year-old ex-convict, Jeremiah Isaiah Nkanta, barely three years after he was jailed for dealing in illicit drugs.
Nkanta, who was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by a High Court in Uyo in 2022, was taken into custody again after intelligence reports revealed his return to the drug trade.
According to a statement by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday, operatives tracked the octogenarian to his residence in Mmanta-Abak village, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, where he was found in possession of 5.7kg of cannabis.
In a separate operation in Akwa Ibom, NDLEA officers on patrol along the Oron-Ibaka road intercepted 37-year-old businessman Ani Onyebuchi Romans on Friday. Romans, who claimed to reside in Cameroon, were travelling with full-body mannequins suspected of being for their clothing business. A search revealed the mannequins were stuffed with 5.3kg of tramadol pills. The suspect allegedly purchased the opioids in Onitsha, Anambra State, and attempted to smuggle them into Cameroon after the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Meanwhile, NDLEA Commands nationwide continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiatives in schools, worship centres, and community gatherings. Recent sensitisation drives were conducted in Jigawa, Kano, and Ebonyi States, among others, targeting youths and vulnerable groups.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised officers across the country for their operational breakthroughs. He noted that the agency’s balanced approach to drug supply and demand reduction remains central to its national strategy.
