The Algerian defence ministry said the army killed four “terrorists” during an operation in a mountainous area in northwestern Algeria.
The ministry, in a statement on Sunday, February 1, said the operation was ongoing in the Djebel Amrouna area, about 130 kilometres west of Algiers.
Four Kalashnikov assault rifles and ammunition were found, and soldiers “eliminated four terrorists,” according to the statement.
Armed Islamists who have been active since the country’s civil war in 1992–2002 are referred to by the authorities as “terrorists.”
Despite the 2005 Charter for Peace and Reconciliation, which aimed to end the violence, armed groups continue to carry out sporadic attacks.
The official death toll from the conflict, dubbed the “black decade,” was approximately 200,000.
The army has “killed 21 terrorists, captured eight others, and 38 terrorists have repented” thus far this year, according to the defence ministry.
It noted that “369 individuals supporting terrorist groups were arrested” during the same period.
The army also hinted that more than 100 weapons were recovered.
In a separate operational report, the People’s National Army said combined units, working with other security services, foiled attempts to smuggle more than three quintals of cannabis resin across the border with Morocco between January 1 and 7, 2026.
The operations led to the arrest of 28 suspected drug traffickers.
“As part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and multifaceted organised crime, units and detachments of the People’s National Army carried out several operations with excellent results between January 1 and 7, 2026,” the army said, noting “ the high level of professionalism, vigilance and constant readiness” across the country.
