Iran on Saturday requested an emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to address what it described as “baseless” US and Israeli claims used to justify military actions against its nuclear programme.

In a statement posted on X, Iran’s mission to the Vienna-based agency said the meeting was requested “in light of ongoing acts of aggression by the US and Israeli regimes.”

The post included an image of a formal letter to IAEA chief Rafael Grossi.

The mission added that the board should address “baseless claims, vicious threats and wrongful acts of aggressors against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program immediately.”

Grossi participated in the recent US-Iran talks on February 17 and 26, which some observers viewed as critical opportunities to prevent escalation.

The UN nuclear watchdog also stressed the “utmost urgency” of verifying all nuclear material in Iran, according to a confidential report seen by AFP on Friday.

Western nations, led by the US and Israel, have accused Tehran of pursuing nuclear weapons capabilities, a charge Iran denies, insisting its programme is for civilian purposes only.
