A helicopter crash in a vacant lot southeast of Manila on Tuesday morning resulted in the deaths of a Malaysian national and a Filipino.
The aircraft, which was carrying five people, including two Malaysians, went down in a grassy section of a residential district in Pililla, Rizal.
Local authorities reported that the incident occurred around 7:27 am, startling residents of the small town as the aircraft descended.
The crash claimed two lives, while the pilot was left in critical condition.
Despite his severe injuries, Pililla Mayor John Masinsin praised the pilot’s skill and composure, noting that he managed to steer the failing helicopter into an empty lot to avoid hitting any homes or bystanders.
The three survivors, described as being in a profound state of shock, were transported to a specialised hospital in Metro Manila at the request of their families.
Initial police reports indicate that the tragedy was triggered by a mechanical failure, forcing the pilot to attempt an emergency landing as the engine began to shut down mid-flight.
Provincial police officer Ramjae Pangga confirmed that the emergency manoeuvre was a direct response to the impending engine failure.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the malfunction.
As investigators examine the wreckage in the Pililla residential area, the focus remains on understanding the technical breakdown that led to the fatal descent.
