The Nigeria Governors Forum says it has submitted its input on the proposed state police framework, with the document forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.

Chairman of the forum and Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, disclosed this during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Lagos.

He explained that consultations on the creation of state police are ongoing among security stakeholders under the National Security Adviser’s coordination, adding that the governors have now contributed to the process.

AbdulRazaq said the proposal would be transmitted to the National Assembly to facilitate the development of a legal framework for state policing.

“On the issue of state police, discussions are ongoing amongst various security organisations, led by the National Security Advisor, and the NGF has made its contribution.

“That document will be taken to the National Assembly to see how we can have a legislative framework for state police,” the governor stated.

He also reiterated the governors’ commitment to strengthening cooperation with security agencies to tackle terrorism, expand infrastructure, and improve living conditions across the country.

The NGF chairman congratulated Tinubu on his recent visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties and attracting investment.

He expressed confidence that agreements reached during the trip would deepen relations between both countries and deliver economic benefits to Nigerians.

“We congratulate you on the successful state visit to the United Kingdom and the many successes, investment proposals achieved during the trip.

“While our nation has always enjoyed good relationship with the United Kingdom, the state visit, the first in 37 years, is bold and significant. It speaks to new leadership in Nigeria.

“We are confident that the bilateral agreements presently signed and the new approach on issues of shared interest will strengthen existing relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom and will bring more prosperity to our people,” he said.

AbdulRazaq further commended the president’s implementation of the Renewed Hope agenda, noting that it has encouraged greater citizen participation in national development, which he said could positively impact security.

He called for collective efforts to address insecurity nationwide, stressing the need to end persistent security breaches.

The governor also urged Nigerians, particularly leaders, to embrace values such as unity, compassion, and selflessness to promote national stability and progress.

He noted that about 25 governors attended the meeting on short notice, describing it as a reflection of their support for the president’s leadership.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and other senior government officials were present at the meeting.

The push for state police has remained a subject of debate, with supporters arguing it would improve security at the grassroots, while critics warn of potential misuse by state authorities.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, had earlier set up a committee to develop modalities for its possible implementation.
