Nigeria’s process of securing diplomatic approval for its ambassadorial nominees from host countries is ongoing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Nigeria) said on Monday.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said several countries have already granted agrément, the formal consent required before ambassadors can assume duty.

“I wish to inform you that the process of receiving agréments from the countries the ambassadors-designate are posted to is ongoing,” Ebienfa said.

According to him, the date for the induction ceremony of the envoys will be announced once it is finalised and approved by the Presidency.

Nigeria has operated without substantive ambassadors in many foreign missions since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, with diplomatic posts largely managed by chargés d’affaires.

The Presidency later forwarded a list of ambassadorial nominees to the National Assembly of Nigeria in 2025. The nominees were screened by the Senate of Nigeria in December.

Under diplomatic protocol, ambassadors-designate cannot assume duty until host countries grant agrément, a formal approval required before their deployment.
