Former United States vice president Kamala Harris has indicated she may run again for the presidency, telling a Democratic audience she is considering a bid in the 2028 election.

Speaking at an event organised by Al Sharpton’s National Action Network in New York, Harris did not formally declare her candidacy but made it clear she is weighing the option of entering the race.

The former vice president, who lost the 2024 election to Donald Trump, suggested she is reflecting on another campaign while engaging party supporters.

Drawing on her time in office, Harris said her experience at the highest levels of government had given her a clear understanding of the demands of the presidency and what the role requires.

“I spent countless hours in my West Wing office, footsteps away from the Oval Office. I spent countless hours in the Oval Office, in the Situation Room. I know what the job is. And I know what it requires,” she said.

She also criticised current political and economic conditions, arguing that many Americans are not being adequately served by the status quo.

“The status quo is not working, and hasn’t been working for a lot of people for a long time.”

After largely staying out of the spotlight following her 2024 defeat, Harris has recently increased her public engagements, including appearances and visits across parts of the United States.

People close to her say she has yet to make a final decision but is keeping the option of a campaign open.

The National Action Network gathering is seen as an early platform for potential 2028 contenders, particularly as Black voters are expected to play a key role in the Democratic nomination process.

Harris used the opportunity to criticise Trump’s leadership and stress that public office should be driven by the needs of citizens rather than personal ambition.

“The American people have right to expect that anyone who wants to run for office and be a leader, that it can’t be about themselves and what they want for themselves.

“It’s got to be about the American people, and that’s how I think of it.”
