Cape Verde have earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Uruguay in their second Group H match at the World Cup on Sunday, continuing an impressive debut campaign on football’s biggest stage.
The tournament newcomers stunned Uruguay by taking the lead in the 21st minute through Kevin Pina, whose long-range free-kick found the net after a powerful run by Telmo Arcanjo earned Cape Verde the opportunity.
Uruguay responded before halftime, with Maxi Araujo heading home an equaliser after capitalising on a rebound.
Araujo then turned provider, setting up Agustin Canobbio with another header as Uruguay went into the break leading 2-1.

Cape Verde refused to back down and found a second-half equaliser through substitute Helio Varela just two minutes after coming on.
Varela took advantage of a misplaced back pass from Mathias Olivera, rounded the goalkeeper and calmly slotted into an empty net to make it 2-2.
Both sides pushed for a winner in an entertaining end-to-end contest, but neither team could find a decisive goal.
The result leaves Cape Verde and Uruguay on two points each in Group H, behind leaders Spain, who sit on four points heading into the final round of group matches.
Cape Verde’s spirited performance keeps their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive as they prepare for a crucial final group game.
