Official figures released on Friday confirm that the death toll from Venezuela’s devastating twin earthquakes has risen to 2,645, with more than 12,600 others injured.

Rescue teams continue to search for thousands of people who remain missing after the powerful shocks toppled dozens of apartment complexes.

The disaster primarily devastated the coastal La Guaira region, located just north of the capital city of Caracas.

The coastal state of La Guaira, which sits on a major tectonic fault line and previously suffered from deadly landslides in 1999, bore the brunt of the seismic waves.

Emergency workers and international aid groups are still racing against time to locate survivors amidst the ongoing destruction.
