The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month has exceeded 5,000 people, National Assembly Chief Jorge Rodriguez confirmed on X on Friday.
The powerful 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes hit within a minute of each other on June 24, decimating the coastal state of La Guaira north of Caracas.

Rodriguez noted that the disasters killed a total of 5,069 individuals, with the vast majority of these casualties occurring within the hard-hit coastal region.
The disaster also left 16,740 people injured, a figure that remains unchanged since previous government assessments.

The parliamentary leader stated that medical staff have already discharged most of these individuals from local hospitals.
Meanwhile, the tremors left roughly 20,000 people homeless.
These displaced residents now live in overcrowded temporary camps that severely lack clean water supplies and proper sanitation systems.
