Monsoon Death Toll Tops 100 in India

More than 100 people have died in India following widespread floods and landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains since July, according to official figures released on Wednesday.

The northeastern state of Assam has recorded the highest number of fatalities, with at least 87 people killed.

Sivasagar district remains the worst affected, accounting for 47 deaths as floodwaters continue to submerge several communities.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed for public donations to support relief and rehabilitation efforts, describing the destruction as unprecedented in many affected areas.

In southern Kerala, at least 15 people have lost their lives, while seven others remain missing after days of torrential rainfall caused landslides and rivers to overflow.

Authorities have established more than 300 relief camps, providing shelter for over 10,000 displaced residents.

The Himalayan territory of Jammu and Kashmir has also been affected, with at least 31 people killed during intense bursts of rainfall.

Scientists have warned that climate change is making South Asia’s annual monsoon season increasingly erratic and destructive, despite its importance for agriculture.

Neighbouring Sri Lanka has also experienced severe weather, with flash floods and mudslides killing at least eight people since Monday and forcing about 12,000 residents to flee their homes.
