The Kogi State Government has ordered an investigation into the deaths of four family members in Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area, after they reportedly ate amala.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, disclosed this on Saturday in a statement.
Fanwo said Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo directed the Commissioner for Health to investigate the deaths and determine whether food poisoning or contamination was responsible.
“The Chief Servant is deeply concerned by this tragic incident and has directed the Commissioner for Health to immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths,” Fanwo said.
He said the investigation would examine whether the food consumed by the family was contaminated or whether other medical or environmental factors contributed to the deaths.

Fanwo added that relevant samples and evidence would be collected and examined according to public health procedures.
The government is also investigating reports that the family’s dog died after eating the same food.
Fanwo said the Ministry of Health would work with relevant agencies and stakeholders to ensure a thorough investigation and appropriate public health action.
The commissioner urged residents to remain calm and avoid speculating about the cause of the deaths until the investigation is completed.
Fanwo said Governor Ododo had commiserated with the bereaved family and the people of Ihima over the incident.
He assured residents that the government would release further information once verified facts emerge from the investigation.
