The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has donated four vehicles to the Nigerian Armed Forces in recognition of the country’s contributions to regional integration, democracy, peace, and security.
The handover took place at the Defence Headquarters Garrison, Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja.
The vehicles comprise one HIGER bus and three HAVAL SUVs.
ECOWAS said they were part of logistics equipment donated by the Chinese government to support the operationalisation of the ECOWAS Logistics Depot in Lungi, Sierra Leone.
The equipment is currently being kept at the Defence Headquarters Garrison in Abuja.
Speaking at the ceremony, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, praised Nigeria for what he described as its longstanding leadership and contributions to regional stability.

He described the handover as “a token gesture of ECOWAS’ appreciation” for Nigeria’s commitment and sacrifices towards promoting democracy and supporting regional efforts to restore and maintain peace and security in member states.
The ECOWAS Commissioner for Internal Services, Dr Habibu Yaya Bappah, also thanked the Nigerian government and citizens for their continued support for the regional bloc.
Responding on behalf of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Commander of the Defence Headquarters Garrison, Major General Mike Alechenu, thanked ECOWAS for recognising Nigeria’s contributions to democracy and regional security.
He assured the commission that the vehicles would be “put to effective and productive use.”
Nigeria has historically played a significant role in ECOWAS peace and security operations, including through its military contributions to regional interventions and peacekeeping missions.
