The Lagos State Government has given traders and other illegal occupants around the newly constructed Ojo General Hospital seven days to vacate road setbacks and statutory corridors reserved for public infrastructure.
The directive followed an enforcement and public sensitisation exercise by the Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority (LASISMA), under the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, around the hospital along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway by the LASU-Iba Road Junction.
The exercise, which began on Monday, August 24, involved sensitising occupants and serving contravention notices on individuals and structures found to be illegally occupying the designated spaces.
Speaking with journalists after the exercise, LASISMA General Manager, TPL Daisi Oso, said the government was reclaiming the spaces to restore them to their intended purposes.
Oso expressed concern over several activities around the hospital, including illegal dumping of refuse, an unauthorised fruit market, public toilets, a planks market and shanties.
He said the activities and structures were “incompatible with the edifice’s status” and could undermine the environment around the newly constructed hospital.
According to Oso, the encroachment could affect “physical orderliness, public health, and security” around the facility.
He also stressed the need to keep the hospital accessible, particularly for emergency cases.
“The importance of ensuring free access to the hospital, especially for emergency cases requiring urgent medical attention,” was among the concerns highlighted by the LASISMA general manager.
Oso said the state government had directed the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, through LASISMA, to reclaim the spaces and restore them to their designated uses.
He urged traders and other illegal occupants to leave the affected areas, warning that the government would no longer tolerate converting road setbacks and spaces reserved for public institutions to unauthorised uses.
According to Oso, Monday’s exercise focused mainly on sensitisation and issuing contravention notices, with affected occupants given seven days to comply.
He said “further enforcement action would commence” after the seven-day compliance period.
Oso added that the entire perimeter of Ojo General Hospital had been encroached on, with contravention notices served on all identified illegal occupants in the affected areas.
The government also plans to redevelop and properly manage the spaces surrounding the hospital, Oso said, adding that the proposed complementary uses would improve the facility’s functionality and environment.
Town planners from the Technical Services Department of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the Office of Physical Planning, and LASISMA staff supported the enforcement exercise.
The state government said the wider campaign aims to protect road setbacks and statutory corridors reserved for public buildings and critical government infrastructure across Lagos.
