Security operatives have rescued 11 people who were mostly National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members after gunmen attacked vehicles along the Aloma–Egane Expressway in Kogi State.
The incident occurred at about 4:40 pm on Wednesday, around Ogene Zaria near the Ogene Zaria–Onicha-Igo Junction in Ofu Local Government Area.
The gunmen reportedly emerged from the bush and blocked two buses travelling in opposite directions, abducting some passengers who were mostly corps members while others escaped into the bush.
Following a distress call, the Ofu Divisional Police Officer led a joint security team to the scene and recovered two abandoned vehicles.
The vehicles were a white Peace Mass Transit Hummer bus and a yellow 18-seater bus.
Police said a coordinated bush search led to the rescue of 11 victims, including the drivers of the two buses.
Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Afusat, said preliminary debriefing showed that most of those rescued were National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members travelling from Bayelsa State to Abuja.
The rescued victims were debriefed and allowed to continue their journey after completing the necessary procedures. Police said the search operation is still ongoing in the surrounding forest to rescue any remaining victims and arrest the attackers.
The Command assured residents and travellers along the route that security and intelligence resources were being deployed to secure the area and ensure the safe recovery of the remaining abductees.
