Algeria Moves To Impose Death Penalty For Arsonists

Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered the Penal Code amended before September 15 to impose the death penalty on deliberate arsonists.

On Sunday, Tebboune directed Justice Minister Lotfi Boudjemaa to amend the Penal Code before September 15 to introduce the punishment. He ordered the proposed amendments to be submitted to the government this week before going to the People’s National Assembly.

“Anyone who believes the law will not be enforced should know that society and justice will exact their due from him,” Tebboune said.

The president also ordered governors of affected provinces to provide security agencies with information on the fires, saying several suspects had already been arrested. He said the simultaneous outbreak of fires in several areas raised concerns, particularly those that started around 1:00 am and spread rapidly despite the absence of wind.

“It is known for its sacrifices, and no one can force it to its knees,” Tebboune said, reaffirming Algeria’s ability to overcome the crisis.

He ordered authorities to assess the damage and ensure residents affected by the fires receive full compensation.

The Finance Ministry is finalising details of the compensation package, which will cover all losses suffered during the fires.

Tebboune also directed the Housing Minister to provide immediate accommodation for displaced residents. He ordered the creation of an expert group to review housing standards in forested areas and reduce future fire risks.

The president further directed authorities to restore drinking water, gas, electricity and telecommunications services by Saturday at the latest. He said the government’s priority was to confront anyone seeking to weaken Algeria or threaten its unity.
