The United States (US) President Donald Trump has said he will delay filling the White House press secretary position, which has been vacant since the end of August.
Trump said on Sunday that he would temporarily rely on department secretaries to hold White House press conferences.
“You know what we’re going to do for a little while? We’re going to use the secretaries of departments to hold press conferences,” Trump told reporters before leaving Ireland.
“But ultimately, I’ll pick somebody,” he said.
Former Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt left the position at the end of August after serving as the youngest-ever US presidential spokesperson.
Leavitt became known for sharp exchanges with journalists during her time in the White House.
Her departure has triggered widespread speculation in Washington over who will replace her.
Leavitt said she wanted to spend more time with her family following the birth of her second child in May.
Her exit comes as Trump faces declining poll numbers and Republicans prepare for November’s midterm congressional elections, where the party risks losing ground.
