Former Senator Shehu Sani has said most Nigerians do not know what is happening in their state’s Houses of Assembly and are unaware that local governments have a legislative arm.

Sani, in a post on X on Sunday, said most people have never visited their state assemblies and do not know their legislators.

“One can hardly read any post on the activities of the State legislature or the LGs on social media,” Sani said.

He attributed the situation to “ignorance, lack of interest or fear of the local dudes, many of whom may not take criticism lightly.”

Sani said the only tier of government most people know is the National Government.

“Governance at the local level relatively enjoys immunity from public scrutiny,” he said.

The observation comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections, with campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections already under way.
