President Bola Tinubu has called on those seeking Nigeria’s presidency to set out the cost of their campaign promises, how they would deliver them and whether the commitments could be sustained.
Tinubu, in a post on X on Sunday, said government pledges must rest on credible plans and remain financially viable.
He warned against shifting the burden to citizens and future generations.

“As President, I have a duty to provide relief today without compromising our children’s future,” Tinubu said.
“Every commitment must be sustainable and backed by a credible plan. That responsibility guides our decisions, including the difficult ones.”
Tinubu said it was easy for politicians to make promises when the financial consequences could be postponed.

“Anyone seeking to lead Nigeria should be prepared to explain what their promises will cost, how they will deliver them, and whether they can sustain them,” he said.
“Promises are easy to make when the costs can be postponed, leaving Nigerians and future generations to pay the bill.”
The President referenced the experiences of Nigerians he identified as Blessing, Ada, Abigail and Kabir, saying their accounts illustrated how government investments affect daily life.
He also responded to a request from a citizen named Emmanuel, acknowledging the scale of work still needed to widen access to essential services.
“Emmanuel, your request reminds me of the work still ahead. I know many more Nigerians like you are waiting for these services,” Tinubu said.
