The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has activated its emergency response after an explosion on a gas pipeline belonging to its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited, in the Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The company said the explosion occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

“We are deeply concerned by reports of injuries and damage to homes and businesses,” NNPC said in a statement on Friday signed by Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh.

“Our thoughts are with those affected and their families. Protecting lives and preventing further harm are our immediate priorities.”

NGIC activated its emergency response procedures and isolated the affected pipeline segment to limit further impact, the company said.

It said it was working with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, security agencies and other stakeholders to coordinate the response and assess the impact on people, property and the environment.

The company said it was also engaging host community leadership to understand immediate needs and coordinate support for those affected.
