Paris police have arrested a “record” 855 people on Sunday over protest violence in the capital on Saturday, while prosecutors have said more than 500 remain in custody.
The prosecutor’s office added that the figures include 346 adults and 171 minors, stressing that they are provisional and could change.
“Arrests took place throughout the night and up to 6:00 am (0400 GMT) this morning,” the prosecutor’s office said.

The violence on Saturday involved clashes between people and police, several street fires and widespread looting in Paris and other French cities.

Paris Deputy Mayor Lamia El Aaraje said the capital had experienced an unusual level of unrest.
“a level of violence that I believe we had never seen before,” she said.
According to the prosecutor’s office, most arrests were linked to receiving stolen goods, suspected involvement in plans to commit violence and vandalism. Authorities have not provided a final breakdown of the arrests, as the investigation and custody process continue.
