Kenya has recorded its eighth Ebola case after a health ministry official confirmed that a 49-year-old man tested positive for the virus.
Health Ministry Director Patrick Amoth disclosed the latest case in an interview with Citizen TV late Sunday. He said the man had symptoms including fever, headaches and muscle pain.
“Today we tested 38 persons, one turned positive,” Amoth said, adding that the man had been in quarantine since October 9.
The man worked as support staff at a health facility, where he handled tasks such as laundry. Amoth said he was likely exposed to the virus in the room of Kenya’s first Ebola patient.

Kenya reported its first case on October 6. The patient was a businessman in his 40s who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where a major Ebola outbreak has been ongoing since May. He travelled to Kenya by road and air through Uganda and died on October 5.
The other seven cases in Kenya have involved relatives of the first patient or health workers who treated him. Amoth said they were all in stable condition. Meanwhile, Kenyan health authorities said last week that they had identified 130 contacts linked to the outbreak. Of these, 128 had been traced and quarantined.
Neighbouring Uganda recorded 20 cases, almost all imported from the DRC, and two deaths before declaring the end of its outbreak in August. In the DRC, the outbreak has exceeded 9,000 cases, with 4,381 deaths, according to Congolese health authorities.
