Reports that the West African Examinations Council has restricted subject choices for some students or changed Nigeria’s national curriculum are false, the examination body disclosed on Monday.
WAEC, in a statement on its official X handle, said it neither alters nor restricts the national curriculum, which it said is the sole responsibility of the Ministry of Education.
“The Council does not alter or restrict the national curriculum. Curriculum design is the sole responsibility of the Federal Ministry of Education, and we strictly adhere to all approved national standards,” the statement said.
Our attention has been drawn to misleading reports claiming the Council has imposed subject restrictions on certain students or altered the national curriculum. This is FALSE.
The Council does not alter or restrict the national curriculum. Curriculum design is the sole responsibility of the Federal Ministry of Education, and we strictly adhere to all approved national standards.

The denial followed social media posts and online reports alleging that WAEC had revised subject combinations for 2026, including claims that economics was being restricted to science and arts students.
WAEC said it has no authority to design or modify the curriculum, noting that “curriculum design is the sole responsibility of the Federal Ministry of Education, and we strictly adhere to all approved national standards.”
