The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has begun mobilising support for Nigeria after the country confirmed a case of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, the agency’s director-general announced on Tuesday evening.

Dr Jean Kaseya said he spoke with Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, who informed him of the confirmed case.

“I commend his transparency and leadership. Early case notification saves lives,” Kaseya said in a post on X.

He warned that the outbreak has become the most geographically extensive in history, affecting several countries across three regions of Africa, with a fatality rate approaching 50 percent in the DRC.

“My call to the international community is urgent: LET US ACT NOW!” Kaseya said.

“We need immediate and flexible funding, medical equipment, diagnostic tools, qualified response personnel, and strengthened community surveillance. We cannot allow this outbreak to spread to other countries or to continue for another year.”

He stressed that “every day of delay costs lives” and that “Africa’s health security is inseparable from global health security.”

“Nigeria can count on our full solidarity and unwavering support,” he said.
