One person has died, and eight others have been injured following an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, eastern Saudi Arabia, according to the country’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA).

GACA said hospitals treated the injured, whose conditions ranged from minor injuries to critical cases. Authorities have not provided further details on the nature of the attack or identified those responsible.

The incident came hours after Saudi Arabia reported another security incident involving its energy infrastructure. The Ministry of Energy said two people died after Saudi air defences intercepted a drone attempting to strike a facility at Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oilfield.

The attacks are the latest to affect airports and other strategic sites in Saudi Arabia as fighting involving Houthi forces and the Saudi-backed internationally recognised Yemeni government continues.

On October 11, Saudi authorities said a projectile struck King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, leaving one person dead and 11 others injured. A separate attack on the same airport a day earlier reportedly claimed 12 lives and injured more than 300 people.

Security concerns have also led the United States to reduce its diplomatic presence in the kingdom. On Wednesday, the US State Department ordered diplomats and eligible family members to leave its missions in Saudi Arabia because of the threat of further Houthi attacks.

US officials have also said they could withdraw family members from several other diplomatic missions across the region.

The US embassy in Riyadh issued a security alert warning of possible further attacks in Saudi Arabia as authorities continue to assess threats to airports, oil facilities, and other key infrastructure.
