North Korea launched an unidentified projectile off its eastern coast on Thursday, South Korea’s defence ministry reported, as tensions between the two countries continue to rise over a dispute along their heavily fortified border.
Japan’s defence ministry also reported the launch, saying the projectile appeared to be a ballistic missile.
“The North fired an unidentified projectile into the East Sea,” South Korea’s military said, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.

The launch followed South Korea’s proposal last week to hold talks with Pyongyang over a landmine explosion in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) that injured three South Korean soldiers.

A joint investigation by Seoul and the United Nations earlier this month concluded that North Korea had planted the mines, which exploded more than a year ago. Pyongyang has rejected the accusation.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has blasted South Korean demands for an apology as “despicable” while separately rejecting an offer of medical equipment from Seoul.
The latest launch comes as United States President Donald Trump renews efforts to engage Pyongyang, raising concerns in South Korea that Washington could pursue nuclear negotiations without adequately involving its ally.
In October, North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles a day after Trump indicated that he might meet Kim Jong Un before the end of the year.
