Former U.S. President Barack Obama loses step-grandmother in the early hours of Monday 29th March at the Jaramogi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu.
Marsat Onyango, the daughter of Mama Sarah Obama, confirmed the news to reporters.
In a condolence message, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said “the passing away of Mama Sarah is a big blow to the nation. She was a strong, virtuous woman, a matriarch who held together the Obama family and was an icon of family values.”
Mama Sarah as she is fondly called was a philanthropist who mobilized funds to pay school fees for many orphans and vulnerable children while also supporting widows.
