The demonstrations have mostly been seen at Harper City, near Liberia’s border with Ivory Coast.

The protesting women have also been accused of arson, for setting the home of the Speaker of the House of Representatives ablaze in the county.

Liberia’s Police say it was difficult to contain the demonstrations and the rioters as they came in tens of thousands, with the population pegged at between 20,000 and 30,000.

The Police noted the prison was invaded because the protesters aimed to attack the alleged killer of a motorcyclist.
