Algerian authorities have suspended the broadcasts of a television news channel for 10 days after it used a racist slur in a Facebook post to describe African migrants.
Echorouk News TV shared the derogatory term on social media following police raids in which migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were detained. The post, which sparked outrage, was deemed “extremely serious” by the ANIRA broadcasting authority.
The authority condemned the publication, describing it as a “racist and discriminatory term” that attacked the dignity of the individuals involved and conveyed hate speech against people of a specific race. ANIRA demanded that the channel’s management issue an official apology for the incident.
Algeria has long been a transit point for undocumented African migrants attempting to reach Europe, with many seeking employment within the North African country. Since April, Algeria has expelled roughly 5,000 African migrants to neighbouring Niger, according to state television, with half of those being from Niger.
