FBI, DEA Request 90-Day Extension for Tinubu Records Release

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have sought an additional 90 days from a United States District Court to produce investigative documents about an alleged drug case involving Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu.

This information was included in a joint status report submitted to the US District Court for the District of Columbia on Thursday. The matter relates to Tinubu’s purported involvement in a Chicago drug operation that dates back to the 1990s.

Nonetheless, the plaintiff, Aaron Greenspan, a legal transparency advocate in the United States and founder of PlainSite, pushed back against the 90-day extension and suggested a 14-day timeframe for the FBI and DEA to provide the pertinent records.

The District Court, under Judge Beryl Howell’s oversight, had previously instructed the FBI and DEA to offer a status update on the search and release of non-exempt documents by May 2, 2025.

Greenspan submitted 12 FOIA requests between 2022 and 2023 to obtain information concerning a Chicago drug ring involving four individuals, including Tinubu.

The FBI and DEA had previously issued “Glomar responses,” declining to confirm or deny the presence of the requested records. However, the court determined that such responses were unsuitable in this instance.

In the Joint Status Report filed on May 1, 2025, the FBI and DEA notified the court that they required more time to finalise their searches.

Despite this, Greenspan contended that the agencies should produce unredacted copies of the documents they had already identified by next week.
