Australian racing driver Oscar Piastri completed a hat-trick of wins by taking the victory in the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, as McLaren secured a dominant one-two finish with teammate Lando Norris coming in second.
Piastri crossed the line 4.6 seconds ahead of Norris, while Mercedes’ George Russell finished third, trailing by a significant 37.6 seconds.
This win marked Piastri’s third consecutive victory, following his triumphs in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, and his fourth win in the first six races of the season.
Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion, who had started from pole, finished in fourth place. Williams’ Alex Albon claimed fifth, and 18-year-old Italian Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes took sixth.
“I knew I had a good pace advantage after avoiding Max at turn one,” said Piastri. “The car was incredible today. The hard stint was a bit challenging, but overall, I’m thrilled to leave Miami with the win.”
Reflecting on the team’s progress, he added, “Two years ago, we were the slowest team here, getting lapped twice. Today, we won by 35 seconds.”
Piastri, who started in fourth, seized the lead on lap 14 when Verstappen missed his braking point and ran wide. The Red Bull driver was heard on team radio expressing frustration with his brakes.
Norris, who had been battling with Verstappen, eventually moved up to second but was already 9 seconds behind Piastri by that point.
Despite being runner-up, Norris expressed satisfaction with McLaren’s performance.
“Oscar drove well, and the team did an amazing job. I’m happy with second, even if I could’ve done better today.”
Russell, who had a tough weekend and started behind Antonelli in qualifying, was relieved to finish third. “It’s great to be on the podium. McLaren was just too strong today,” he said.
It was a frustrating race for Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc finishing seventh and Lewis Hamilton one position behind him.
Hamilton, in his first season with Ferrari, voiced his dissatisfaction with his team’s strategy, particularly after being asked to let Leclerc pass.
Carlos Sainz is under investigation by stewards for a risky overtaking attempt on Hamilton in the final corner.
