Several people lost their lives and others were hurt after a driver drove into a crowd at a Filipino street festival in Vancouver, Canada, on Saturday night.
The driver was arrested soon after the crash, which happened around 8 p.m. local time at East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, according to Vancouver Police on X (formerly Twitter).
Police have not yet confirmed how many people were killed or why it happened.
The crash occurred near the location of the Lapu-Lapu Day block party, a festival celebrating Filipino culture. The event honours Lapu-Lapu, a Filipino leader known for resisting colonial rule in the 16th century.
Deana Lancaster, a spokesperson for Vancouver General Hospital — the area’s main trauma centre — said the hospital was treating several patients from the incident. She believed they were from the Lapu-Lapu Day celebration.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said he was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the tragic event. He added that more details would be shared as soon as they were available. He also offered his support and sympathy to everyone affected.
British Columbia Premier David Eby said his team was in contact with city officials and would offer any assistance needed. Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, posted on X that he was “horrified” by what had happened.
